Welsh: altered form of GWYNEDD (SEE Gwynedd), used as a female name. Its popularity from the late 19th century, at first in Wales and then more widely in the English-speaking world, seems to have been due originally to the influence of Annie Harriet Hughes (1852–1910), who adopted the pen-name Gwyneth Vaughan.
